A fundamentals text gives first-year learners a framework for assessment, communication, safety, and person-centered care. A medical-surgical reference serves a different purpose: connecting a condition with assessment findings and nursing priorities. A care-planning handbook is a useful companion, but it does not replace the explanations in your core textbook.
For exam preparation, match the review book to your credential. An NCLEX-RN guide and a nurse practitioner certification guide target different levels of practice. Keep the edition required by your program at the center of your choice, then add a review reference for the areas you need to revisit.
